The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has recently carried out an operation saving Arkady Babchenko, Russian journalist working in Ukraine. On May 29, 2018, it reported that Babchenko had been shot dead.
Danys Kolesnyk invited at The Debate hosted by the French TV channel France 24 English to discuss the so-called ‘Babchenko Affair’.
He pointed out that the “faked death” of this journalist should not be seen through the lens of “fake news” as many wanted to see it, but rather through a military strategy since Ukraine is at war with Russia, even though an undeclared war. Therefore, the best is to discuss the Babchenko Affair through Sun Tsu and Clausewitz.
Mr Kolesnyk also stressed, that one of the main tasks of the SBU, in his opinion, was not only to preserve the life of Arkady Babchenko but also to find the double agents within the SBU who work in the interests of the Russian state. And from this point of view, the distortion of information was needed to avoid any leaks and to spot the double agents.
Concluding, he said that the information is used by many countries, including Russia, to advance the national interests and to influence the situation in other countries. For instance, Denys reminded that recently the CNI, Spanish security agency, has published a report acknowledging the Russian meddling into Catalonia. Therefore, the problem with the use of the information by foreign states is not only a problem in Ukraine. Although many western democracies, including France concerning the fight against the manipulation of information.
